I am in probably Simpson's target group for this series. I'm a dev who mostly builds out the Service/API layer and needs to do some JavaScript on a semi-regular basis. I'm expanding that API experience into Node JS and diving more into front end frameworks. Being acutely aware of the nature of the platforms, I knew I'd need to be well versed in async to get any sort of performance out of it.The discussion of Promises made the book worth the read for me. Before I had a "good enough" idea of what was happening with Promises to use them, but there was still a little fog out there for me. After reading this book, I'm far more comfortable with using Promises, to the point they feel natural to me. Between that chapter and the first two chapters, I'd give the book 4 1/2 or 5 stars. Regardless of my thoughts on the rest of the book, those first chapters were well worth recommending the book. The only caveat I'd put on it is he throws around "inversion of control" pretty casually and almost always in a negative sense. Someone not that familiar with IoC would readily walk away from this book with the idea that it's *always* an anti-pattern to use IoC.However, the next three chapters (there's only six with several being fairly long) are a bit less impressive. There are too many distractions with *possible* enhancements for future JS frameworks and way too little on the current state of ES6. That's convinced me to avoid his "E6 and Beyond" title in hard copy although I'll probably skim the online version. The chapter on generators is over long and spends too much time showing how they can become confusing rather than spending the time focusing on good practice. This really could have been more succinct. The last two chapters are spent on performance and benchmarking but outside of WAY TOO MUCH ranting about not wasting your time on miniscule optimizations, everything was pretty shallow. It was more like a small collection of blog posts than a deep dive into the topics. What actual advice there was seemed to mostly be "just use these frameworks I suggest" than a deep dive. There's two appendices, the first discussing his own framework to build on async operations and another one with a few more patterns for async. Like most appendices, they're ok, but not the meat of the book.
This penultimate edition of the You Don't Know JS series explores everything async: Promises and Generators, mainly. As usual, the content was deep and the examples challenging (in this edition especially so). This book is certainly not for the feint of heart; if you're not an advanced developer and you don't know about these topics, you might consider reading some simpler introductory material online before tackling this. The one negative was the editing; there were many places where a sharp editor could have really clarified and simplified matters. There were a number of places where I'd read a section two or three times, and basically say to myself, "so Kyle's saying X Y Z," and then three paragraphs later see him say almost verbatim, "X Y Z." On the one hand it's always nice seeing that you correctly interpreted something difficult, but on the other a more straightforward presentation would have helped. And many other areas would have similarly benefited from a tightening up of the language, and stating more clearly and up front what the lessons to follow were. But to be clear, the above criticism should not for a moment prevent a senior JS developer from tackling this book. It'll be well worth your time, and you'll no doubt learn a tremendous amount.
This book offers a solid deep dive into various asynchronous and performance issues in javascript - especially when js is deploy in a node.js runtime able to launch operations vastly more complex than javascript executed in a Web browser. The author occassionaly delves into his own subjunctive proposals for the future of JavaScript. Those passages are no doubt well informed and mayne useful to the JS development community. For a reader trying to better understand JS as it is now, those passages might compete for attention and memory best budgeted to understanding tools in the drawer at this time. Overall, side tracks exploring potential devlopment paths not yet included in JacaScript does not at all diminish the authors skilled explanation of how JavaScript works.Particularly intersting to me was an acknowledgement that tried and true methods.... callbacks in particular.. remain part of many workflows until developers make deliberate efforts to learn and practice new approaches such as promises. The book's compare-and-contrast approach to callbacks, promises and generators can help a devloper decide when to push through doing ot the same old way and when to deploy new tools.
This is a great series, but I honestly loved this one the most. Creating a realizable set of abstractions for concurrency that ends with what is today redux sagas is a great introduction to fairly new world of concurrency programming JavaScript is approaching.
Kyle outdoes himself again with this approachable and comprehensive look at challenges and best practices when dealing with asynchronous code in JavaScript. This topic is often treated as if it's inherently complex and hard to grasp, but Kyle proves that this is not the case.
Excellent review of async programming in Javascript with a lot of focus on Promises and Generators. Both are important concepts that are only going to get more relevant.
While these books are available on GitHub for free, I prefer the analog version. This series is a must read for any serious Frontend Engineer.
I took the front end Masters course "rethinking async JavaScript"and also have this book. This book is a good reference and the content is very similar, depends on your learning style, I prefer videos.

After reading Reyna Grande's The Distance Between Us, I was so excited to read this book and I can honestly say it is such a beautifully written book! Grande's vivid and detailed memoir shines light on her journey navigating higher academia in the U.S.. It's also a clear reflection on her hopes and dreams and how they strengthened her to overcome obstacles and identity issues as an immigrant, Mexican woman of color in the U.S. I highly recommend this book!!!
I am so happy Reyna Grande exists. She's made an impact on my life and with this book, I feel compelled to keep trying and chasing my dreams. She is a great role model to have around. We need our stories to be heard. Thank you Reyna!!!
Love the stories, the work her ability to inspire others to continue forward and it is all worth it in the end for her and her family.
A Dream Called Home is Reyna’s story of fighting for her dreams, despite her background, despite the setbacks and roadblocks, and despite the clichés and boxes people tend to stuff one another in here in the US (although that definitely doesn’t just happen here). She wrote about her story as a young Mexican girl crossing the border into the US in her memoir The Distance Between Us, and A Dream Called Home is the story of becoming an adult in a world where she never really feels at home. Each book can be read alone though.Reyna’s parents left her and her siblings with their grandmothers in Iguala, Mexico, when they were children, and crossed the border to the US. Iguala, at the time, and most likely still today, was extremely poor, and opportunities were few and far between. Reyna’s father came back to collect them when Reyna was about 9 and they made the difficult crossing together three times (the first two times they were sent back). That itself amazes me - the crossing is so hard for an adult, I can’t even imagine how tough it would have been on a young child. Her strength and perseverance have always been there…Anyway, in A Dream Called Home Reyna starts with her years at university, and moves on to telling the stories of how she became a teacher, a single mother, and how she continued to push herself to write and to be published. I don’t think I can express how inspiring this book was to me, and how there were some areas that I related to (but more that my partner relates to, our own stories and immigration stories meet and differ in many places). I will be buying a copy of this book for my children, so that when they are older they will understand some of the choices their parents had to make, and also know that the world is theirs, and their voices have as much weight as other voices.Reyna’s recollections are full of many profound statements that hit me hard: that feeling of not belonging anywhere anymore, a double identity that doesn’t fit in here or there. I still carry that with me wherever I go. Reyna has inspired me to keep pushing with my own stories and my own writing, and inspired me to keep reading and talking about the stories that no one wants to talk about.“As with the moon, there is the face that we immigrants show to the world, but our second face is the one we keep hidden in darkness so that no one can see us weeping.â€
Grande's second memoir is as touching as the first. She picked up with attending college and discovering who she really is. Along the way, the author grapples with continuing family struggles, her own identity, and debt. After her college graduation, Grande became a teacher and continued her success as an author, She has tempestuous relationships until finding the one that works for her. A Dream Called Home is an inspiring story about a woman who refused to give up on anything. Thanks to NetGalley for the read.
Reyna Grande was just nine-years-old when she walked across the U.S.-Mexican border in search of her parents who left her years before. The parents she finds aren't the parents a young girl longs for. Reyna surrounds herself reading books and writing. Once she is accepted to the University of California she finds it isn't all that easy to follow your dreams. Told in her own words, her experience for the American Dream is heart breaking yet triumphant. Rising against all odds. A remarkable read I felt deeply.I was given a copy from the publisher for my honest review.Dawnny-Book GypsyNovels N LatteBook Blog
I received this through the Goodreads Giveaway program. This is an amazing book. You're taken into the world of immigrants, a struggle to get an education, dysfunctional families and ultimately professional success and a rewarding life.Anyone who has a 'fear' of immigrants need to read this book. They'll walk away with an admiration for those who come to America and successfully create a life to be proud of. Something so many who are born here don't realize. The author is an amazing worman. I only wish I'd accoomplished as much as she has in her young life.
A DREAM CALLED HOME by Reyna Grande is the compelling sequel to her beautifully-written memoir, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US. The first book was riveting and I could not wait to read the sequel. A DREAM CALLED HOME picks up where Grande left off in THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US and focuses more on her adult life in the United States as she attends college, works tirelessly toward becoming a published writer and ultimately marries and has children. With the same candor and insight of the first book, the reader comes to understand the considerable challenges Ms. Grande faces and overcomes to achieve her dreams. I was again drawn completely into her story and found myself wanting to hear even more. This was a powerful and inspiring sequel with many important messages about the immigrant experience in the United States. I highly recommend it.

Styling is a buzz word right now when it comes to celebrities and reality shows. Since I do not live in NYC or LA, these are not options for me. But knowing that so much styling goes into every photograph I see in my mail, emails and magazines, I knew there was a market for styling beyond what the young, trendy girls were into. Susan took the time to write down every practical (and often un-glamorous) detail that makes you feel like you are as prepared as you can be for a shoot. It breaks down all the different types of styling and gives you challenges to do at home for practice. Equally as important as styling skills are ways to market yourself as a freelancer, which she also covers. There are so many variables that can effect the outcome of a shoot/project, but I feel much more confident after getting what feels like a rare, inside-look at the styling world - minus the drama.
Susan has written a very thorough book about the photo styling industry. I read it cover to cover. I have also purchased one of her dvd's, as well as following her on Face Book.
The author of this book passed away last year and her passing is a huge loss to everyone.
Great book. Horrible course to take for 16 weeks. Opt to simply read the book.
Well, I was kind of disappointed when I received this book. It has a good content, many useful advices, but the book just doesn't look nice. Bad, dark paper, with pretty bad, black and white photos... really?! Ok, there are some color photos in the middle of the book (as if it was published 20 years ago). It is a book about style, so in my opinion it has to be presented as a style book, not as a cheap 20 years old brochure.
Interesting stories in setting up product photograph sets.

Amazon.com Review
Among his many gifts, Joseph Campbell's most impressive was the unique ability to take a contemporary situation, such as the murder and funeral of President John F. Kennedy, and help us understand its impact in the context of ancient mythology. Herein lies the power of The Power of Myth, showing how humans are apt to create and live out the themes of mythology. Based on a six-part PBS television series hosted by Bill Moyers, this classic is especially compelling because of its engaging question-and-answer format, creating an easy, conversational approach to complicated and esoteric topics. For example, when discussing the mythology of heroes, Campbell and Moyers smoothly segue from the Sumerian sky goddess Inanna to Star Wars' mercenary-turned-hero, Han Solo. Most impressive is Campbell's encyclopedic knowledge of myths, demonstrated in his ability to recall the details and archetypes of almost any story, from any point and history, and translate it into a lesson for spiritual living in the here and now. --Gail Hudson

This book is the transcript of the Bill Moyers interview series, but also contains much good and worthwhile material cut from the videos -- and which is still not included in the 25th anniversary reissure of the videos. It's also valuable because in the videos Campbell is so charismatic, so charming, so entertaining, and so articulate, that it's easy to miss the fact that while he makes many claims for the value of myth in living one's life, he never justifies those claims. Even when asked directly for an example of how a myth helped him at some time in his life, he evades the question. Reading the book at one's own pace lets you really examine his words, and reevaluate them.
Having seen the television programs in the original run and having owned the book for decades, I had a really good idea what I would be getting with this six-CD set. "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth" is absolutely essential. The flaws to be found in this format are so minor that it would be embarrassing to nitpick over them. My goal was to get Campbell in something similar to the 1970s NPR "Reading Aloud" broadcast. What I got is better than that. Less comprehensive than the Masks of God books, for sure, "The Power of Myth" weaves in and out of Campbell's great works. Bill Moyers may appear to be out of his depth at times, but Campbell seemed to enjoy the conversation format and he seemed to enjoy Moyers' company. In Program Six, which was recorded shortly before Campbell's death, he briefly appeared to be a little less focused than before; and his voice trailed off a bit a few times. Easy to understand. Then he was right back in his best form. The "Power of Myth" CDs are well worth the money and well worth your time. I ripped mine to audio files and play them, from a flash drive, with the Grace Digital Wifi media player. This is as good as it gets.
Watched the PBS special many years ago which this book is based on and it was a mind blowing experience. Mr. Campbell was an amazing man and while I did not agree with some of his ideas, the vast majority were very thought provoking and insightful.Mr. Campbell always amazed me in the way in which he spoke, it was never perceived as threatening or forceful and people who would normally throw a riot at the thought of some of his ideas would not only listen but engage in conversation. Amazing man and one of a few that I wish I could have met in person.Should be a must read before Junior High.
I was never really interested in mythology in school, coming from a far more mathematical/analytical frame of mind. Alas, I was fortunate to have two wonderful teachers teach me in undergraduate courses in NYU and make me dive into a completely alien subject two years ago. I felt that Joseph Campbell is very clear (and not to mention original!) in explaining the different conceptions of life that altogether constitute mythology. In the interview, he said that his autodidactism came from a ready access to books - and this is very evident from the large length and depth of literature he has studied. It is pointless to go into the content of the book because that is what reading it is for. By reading this book, it helps you understand (or reaffirm) beliefs like viewing comparative mythology as a road to uniting tales and legends common to many cultures into a theoretical framework. Incredibly, you can find that most narratives created by human cultures have very common underlying themes: the most prevalent example is the idea of the 'hero', an ordinary person who lives in confusion, is met with an opportunity where he is forced to go on a journey that ultimately results in an inner reawakening leading him to return to his previous tribe and change it - a common theme in historical epics and religious texts. He mentions different conceptions of the hero, but this interview is a repetition of his ideas written with more detail in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell)'.Campbell mentions instances from a large range of traditions, not only the large dominant ones but the smaller ones including those found in tribes isolated from civilization. For someone like me who is not well versed at all in this subject, the book's accessibility came to me as a great relief. He mentions great points about how the decline of classical education leads to a lack of spiritual reference point to self-reflect in the western world. Some ideas made me understand a few religious concepts far more clearly, such as the idea that people associate Jesus with love because he is more relatable as a human and not a perfect and overbearing figure like God.However, the brilliance of his work is how doesn't dwell excessively on the grandiose and transcendent and instead focuses on the day-to-day challenges faced by us. He talks wonderfully about marriage and the importance of rituals. This same importance is why despite not being a particularly religious person, I keep all my fasts during the month of Ramadan - purely due to the experience itself and not due to the perceived validity of it. Campbell brilliantly expresses how a lack of myth results in spiritual bankruptcy as all cultures (including the scientific worldview that trace our descent from Darwinian forces) use narratives to create moral justifications: A Muslim would say that incest is wrong because it is prohibited by scripture, a person who holds a Darwinian view would say that our repulsion towards incest comes from cultural programming that survived because rules that prohibited inbreeding allowed for a reduction in the possibility of hereditary problems - allowing those subscribers to survive and carry on the tradition through a memetic process. After all, myths are something that we live and die for regardless of our philosophical inclinations. An interesting comparison is how myths drive people towards the idea of sacrifice - letting go of the ego and possessions to integrate into the larger community, the family, then the tribe, country and against all possible odds, perhaps into humanity itself (e.g. Mandela, Abraham when ordered to sacrifice his son). Some of his ideas bare great resemblance to recent history, such as the anarchy created when modernity is imposed at a rapid pace on primitive (or rather less developed countries) by colonial powers - threatening people's myths and by extension their very identities. I think this book is a treasure and it is a good defense against the Dawkins-like Atheists who reject religion altogether by focusing on religions lack of epistemological basis while ignoring the fact that religion has survived for so long because it is an integral part of the human experience and carries useful heuristics ("don't take on debts") . Furthermore, the ideas in this book by extension challenge the view that the modern secular worldview relies on pure objective analysis of morality and social relations - after all, even modern cultures have a belief in some myth, be it progress, liberalism, futurism or the ability for economics to secure human happiness. I am not disregarding the validity of any of this philosophical viewpoints - simply that no culture can exist with the complete absence of a narrative that drives the community. It unveils the irony of atheist groups that reject mythology and group into their own cults, giving credence to the very ideas they claim to reject.Campbell deals with a couple of other interesting ideas including the understanding that "the myth is a public dream and the dream is the private myth". For him, when the union of these two ideas is disturbed when one's private myth is not compatible with the larger mythology of a culture - it results in the birth of a 'hero' that reawakens a culture by molding his culture in accordance to his newfound personal convictions. This is the dramatic explanation of how cultural innovation is thought to take place and why tracing a tradition's history of itself, its birth comes from the journey of a hero. (Muhammad meditating in his cave, Moses seeing God in a tree in the Sinai desert during his exile).Campbell also tackles a central tenet of mythology, the use of language to express the transcendental. He talks about how language stimulates the imagination despite its limitations of being reductive, powerfully reducing incredible inexpressible experiences into short tales and stories. However, the ambiguity of language could mean that it captures the metaphysical with astounding beauty by virtue of the use of abstract words, or not meaning anything at all in the first place. Someone with an analytical background might say that mythology has no epistemological bases and while mythologists might say that science itself doesn't have the power to determine morality and meaning. Both sides have their virtues and it wouldn't be wise to disregard either view without first pondering on both sides of the arguments. Finally, let me start with my criticisms of the book or rather mythology in general. I don't like how Campbell always talks about dreams as meaningful experiences, not emphasizing the possibility that they don't mean anything at all. Yes, dreams are very important to fables, tales, stories and legends but while scientific method is testable through experiment, mythological explanations can be attributed in hindsight to nearly any narrative. Despite this, I firmly believe that the knowledge of common narratives and patterns can be used as an important mental tool. Again, the use of vague and overbearing language and terms often means that anything and nothing can be interpreted in mythological terms - hence making it unfalsifiable. However, giving credit to Campbell - he doesn't seem to believe in hippy or new age mish-mash and simply gives metaphor the importance it deserves. Lastly, I feel that Campbell should have openly taken the stance that while people may use experiences like drugs to journey into consciousness, these attempts are rather futile because self-knowledge arises from years and years of challenges and by immersing into knowledge and not through the hedonistic urge to consume a substance. However, altogether I loved this book and it was a great read.Kudo's to anyone who understands rather than rejects!_____PS: As a childhood Star Wars fan, I was intrigued to see that George Lucas actually took advice from Campbell while filming the movie, that not too surprising as I could not help but notice that mythological elements in the character of Anakin Skywalker myself.
An excellent book. They repeat three times one particullar passage iin the Amazing Amazon move, 13 Houea. the passage:: All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells are within you."
I had always heard the well-known phrase "Follow your Bliss" ...and learned it was attributed to Joseph Campbell. However, until I read this book and discussed it with my book group I wasn't fully aware of the meaning. I would recommend reading this book to gain insight into many of the world's religions and myths and most especially, what I came away with, was how interconnectedwe all are with each other. I've always believed that, but Joesph Campbell helped to solidify that thought. I am only giving the book 4 stars because I would highly recommend seeing the video of the interview. The video is much superior to the book. The book is not an accurate representation of the interviews between Bill Moyers and Campbell. When comparing the two, it appears that the author of "The Power of the Myth" may have taken liberties in many instances and added phrases and ideas that were not in fact said during the interviews. The book still is able to stand on its own, but if given a choice between the two - watching the videos would be the better choice.

Those who kmow Joni's story already understand that she has every reasonable excuse for not expressing hope or joy. But Joni (pronounced "Johnny") knows Jesus, and her hope... rather, her assurance... is in Him.Her optimism is a tonic. And the writing is crisp, clear, and concise. This is a relatively short read, but well worth your time.
I am a soldier in USARPAC stationed in Alaska. I am a woman who gets injured more easily in the Army than I did in civilian life. I have been dealing with bad ankle issues since I was stationed up here, and then during deployment it got a whole lot worse. Once back from deployment the doctors kept telling me oh you just sprained it, they give me pills and a piece of paper that says I can't run on it for so long. I have been getting this from the doctors since 2010. It is mid 2013 and I just now have been blessed with surgery, my ankle was a lot worse than the docs ever thought. I won't go into details , I will walk again, but I may not run like I used to and I dearly enjoyed running. I have been dealing very badly with depression because this injury kept coming up, even with surgery I am battling depression. Because now my husband has to help me with simple things and he is not home much, we are both military. I go back on duty soon, but won't be able to do much...I get so frustrated not being able to do much at all. This book has taken me out of the depths of the black abyss I have been living in and has pulled me into the light! I pray you read this because I fully intend to share this book with all those i meet. This book is saving my life, my marriage, my hopes, my dreams, and my faith. I thank God for Joni everyday, and if God can use a wonderful woman such as herself I know he can use me in others lives. I have been dealing with these health issues, financial issues, negativity at work because I am a woman, amongst so many other things. But this book will be in my top 5 to read every month to help keep me focused on stars not mud. I will share with you one short phrase I learned from another woman then I will go: Two women looked through prison bars, One saw mud the other saw Stars. I don't know who wrote that but I am now focusing on the stars!
How could any of us go on without hope? Perhaps you are in a difficult place right now, with problems weighing down heavily on you. Would you like some hope in this dark time? Joni Eareckson-Tada has some encouraging words for you in her book “Hope… The Best Of All Things.â€Joni knows a thing or two about hope. After suffering an accident as a teenager that left her a quadriplegic, she struggled with the loss of hope. But in that dark place, God met with her in a powerful way, and now Joni travels the world to minister to those in deepest hopelessness.“Hope†is a short book, but it’s packed with new perspectives for those battling depression and darkness. Joni will share with you some of her own experiences—as well as the experiences and insights of others—to give your soul the oxygen it needs: a fresh breath of hope!Whether you are going through a battle, or you know someone who is, “Hope†will be a welcome light for a dark place.
Nobody earns the right to be heard more than those Christian saints who have been "refined in the fire." In this little booklet Tada (a quadriplegic for the past four decades - who speaks, writes, and paints with a brush in her mouth) shares some encouraging words for those who are "in the fire" of suffering. I think that this little booklet is useful to read before, during, or after suffering as the thesis of Tada is centralized on the eventual glory we will experience because of the promises of Christ in the Scriptures. The Four Chapters Are:1) Hope is Hard to Come By - Tada discusses her and our battle with suffering and our selfish nature that only God can deliver us from - "He [God] wanted me to reckon myself dead--dead to sin--because if God can raise the dead, you'd better believe he could raise me out of my hopelessness."2) Meeting Suffering and Joy on God's Terms - She writes, "To this you were called because Christ suffered for you, leaving you this kind of example that you should follow. He endured the cross for the joy that was set before him (Heb. 12:2). Should we expect to do less? So then, join me; boast in your afflictions. Delight in your infirmities. Glory in your weaknesses, for then you know that Christ's power rests in you (2 Cor. 12:9)."3) Hope is Contagious - "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies. But we live in a dark, diseased world under the curse of sin. Hell is real. And God owes this utterly rebellious planet absolutely nothing. But aren't you glad that he is a God of love, not wanting anyone to perish? And he is out to convince this unbelieving, sarcastic, skeptical world of his power to save, his abilities to sustain, and his desire to share his hope."4) Misery May Love Company but Joy Craves a Crowd - "And one day I'm going to leave this wheelchair behind. I cannot wait. I may have suffered with Christ on earth, but one day in heaven I'm going to reign with him."In this little booklet Tada is honest about her struggles, encouraging in her attitude, and inspiring in her commitment for the cause of Christ in this world. Any Christian who reads this will be inspired -and any non-believer should want what Joni has - the hope of glory in Christ. Everyone has to learn how to suffer, but the Christian does not suffer as one who has no hope - and Joni is a great example of how to live in the midst of suffering for the glory of God in magnifying Christ.
Join seems to turn it all around, saying the one's suffering with infirmities are the blessed one's, rather the overcomers are the truly blessed one's,. Whereby every believer should have hope in Christ and be rejoicing about the glorious life to come, Luke 10:20. We should not just set our hopes afar off, but also have tangible hopes in this current life. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you, Matthew 6:33. When we seek first God's kingdom there will be no need for us to seek yet another kingdom, for God's kingdom will provide all of our needs.

This is a great book to give you the strategies for doing well on the ISEE test. In order to succeed on the ISEE test, which, by design, tests above the students' grade level, you need the types of tips and tricks that this book provides. The book teaches the strategies and then reinforces them with every exercise. I highly recommend this book as well as the full Practice Guide published by the same company.
Not as comprehensive as the Success on the Lower Level ISEE by the same publisher. This book was less comprehensive and hard for my child to work through on his own. Has similar content to the other book but is not as good.
This book had great ideas, but beware as the practice "work-outs" are too easy compared to the test! See Ms Abbott's "practice tests" books, and you will see that the test-format questions are harder! My boys worked with this book over a few wks, but didnt get to the practice tests early enough. So they were totally shocked at how hard the practice tests were both in the practice book mentioned above, and in the tests supplied by the ISEE folks. By that time it was too late really to re-calibrate.Do your kid a favor and look at the full practice tests first to gauge difficulty/endurance needed. This book was misleadingly easy.
These books are a good review for the ISEE. Primarily my son used this book as a source of additional practice questions.
The material was level appropriate. The book provides a structure for preparing for the test.
great book for review
Excellent resource for tutors.

This is an astounding chronicle, in equally evocative words and photographs, of life in the rural South amid the Great Depression. I purchased this as research for a stage production of To Kill a Mockingbird, which takes place in that time period in fictional Maycomb County, AL. I had never read the book before, although I was familiar with some of Walker Evans' photographs. I am completely blown away.
This work is touted by some as "one of the twentieth century's greatest pieces of literature." I wouldn't go that far, but the photos are incredible and I have to say the reader is placed right inside the tenant farmer's (Alabama) house and in the fields he tends. The time is the mid-1930s, in the depths of the Great Depression. Tenant farmers down South are struggling with deepening debt, chronic illnesses in their families (NO health care), land that is not arrable, and the hopeless, grinding poverty much of America suffered through in that era. The author, at times, sounds like he is attempting to imitate William Faulkner. The writing in places is highly complex, stream of consciousness stuff in some places. I like the book a lot but the reader must be very patient and willing to read methodically. It's not a breezy kind of style. It will also break your heart. The tenant farmer certainly had a rough go of it. Makes you wonder how much of this country is still in such dire straits.
Wow is this book a roller coaster ride. For me It went from deeply affecting and beautifully poetic to tedious and annoying. For a while I honestly thought this might be the best book I ever read. Then the pace slows . . . or stops even . . . as if you're spacing out along with the author and fixating on a floorboard or cheap picture on the wall. And then it seems like the author hands over the wheel to the photographer, who writes whatever pops into his head for pages upon pages. Or maybe its the same dude writing, in an altered state of mind, I'm not sure.Anyway, to me this book is brave and profound. The brave part is the author's refusal to cash in on this experience by writing what he thinks we (or his bosses) want to hear. But then again he pretty much betrays his trusting hosts by snooping through their stuff and writing real personal stuff surely without their permission. The profoundness to me is the effective relaying of dignity amid the tragedy of a truly trapped situation. If you have ever over-romanticized the south of old, or poor farm life, this book should cure you for good. It's not all perfect, but parts of it are. I would say its definitely worth the trip . . . just be ready for some detours.
It's hard to explain the power of this book. It's a cultural snapshot, but it's also a personal accounting of the coming-together of two cultures, one sophisticated, the other less so. It is the "less so" that is compelling. Highly recommend.
One of the three books that have deeply influenced my life. From Agee's passionate prose and Evans's clear-eyed photographs, one can arrive at a deep understanding of what it means to be human, if understanding is a possibility.
Book is excellent but very deep. I found myself re-reading from time to time.Reader be prepared for the author's projection of how he views the world and at times not so much about the subjects in his observations.I think his advantage is being a New Yorker allowing him to see a world that is so foreign to him. Whereas a Southerner as myself would view more as not being odd or abnormal.
Photos by Walker Evans and text by James Agee...how could this not be excellent! Incredibly moving. Let us honor those merely trying to survive and feed their families .... for them, a meal is the ultimate trial. Agee and Walker's work centered around the working, and literally dirt poor in America, which should be a bounty of opportunity, some 70 years ago....and this is still a timeless story, there are STILL too many families living on the edge their entire lives. I hope this remarkable work never goes out of print, it's difficult to find now, thank goodness for Amazon.
I was assigned to read this book in college. Historically, I've loathed anything I've ever been REQUIRED to read; I prefer to come to the decision as to whether or not I am going to read something on my own. However, I was very much hooked on this book within the first thirty pages or so. Now, having read it twice, it is easily in my top 5 favorite books ever. While the book explores the day to day lives of some of the poorest to come out of extreme rural Alabama, the presentation is rather depth of content is what keeps me reading. Agee's words manage to mix more perception and mental connection than a journalistic account of what he and Walker experience. If you pace your reading and reference the photos as they are featured in the text (because they are grouped together in the middle, or at least they were in the edition I have), then it provides insight into Agee's level of perception...almost like when you ask someone if you can borrow their prescription glasses.I can't recommend this enough. I can't assure you will enjoy it, because it is a lot more than what it looks and reads like at first...but it is certainly in no way a waste of your time and money to experience.
