So I'm an Army girlfriend, and my man is going into the Army Rangers. Finding information about the Rangers can be a little difficult, even with the internet. They're a very elite Special Ops team. So when someone recommended this book to me, I bought it immediately. To my utter delight, the book is highly informative and easy to read. It walks through RASP training day-by-day, week-by-week. The section on Ranger School is much shorter, but RASP 1 is particularly in-depth, and there is a nice section on RASP 2 as well, for those who have someone going that route. In addition, this book includes very helpful information on deployment, the Ranger battalions (1/75, 2/75, and 3/75), and what to expect as someone at home. And finally, one of the early chapters is history of the Rangers. If your soldier is going the Ranger path, you'll probably want to skip to Chapter 3, with all the information about RASP. But the history is very interesting and enlightening as well.I highly recommend this for anyone with a soldier entering the Rangers. Knowledge is power. Rangers lead the way!
I really enjoy Dick Couch's writing. He has a really easy-to-read style that isn't as dumbed down as C.B. Colby back in the day. This book is extremely informative and fun to read. It gives a really human insight into the Rangers that people don't often get. Even (especially?) Soldiers often elevate these guys to godlike status, and makes them seem completely aloof and inaccessible. Dick Couch makes them accessible, without dragging them down to a level of not being special anymore, because the Rangers are the best on the planet at what they do, make no mistake about that. The only complaint I have about the book was the lack of editing. I want to mark up every error in the book and send it back to the publisher. The first 100 pages are rife with so many factual errors that they distract from the fine content of the book. It's not anything big that would make you think Couch made anything up, they are a large number of simple errors like saying that Darby did not live to see D-Day, when he was in fact in Washington with the War Department and didn't die until 1945 (perhaps the meaning was Darby wasn't in Europe to see D-Day?), and that the British were defeating Francis Marion in South Carolina in 1881.I don't want to discredit the book, I really enjoyed it, I just hope the second printing shows more attention to detail befitting the Rangers. Mr. Couch, if you need a better editor, I would be happy to work for you!
Another winner in his series of nonfiction books by the exceptional Dick Couch (when a former, Vietnam combat veteran and hero SEAL writes a - previous - book where he, correctly, identifies the Special Forces, Green Berets, as America's best OVERALL special operations unit and the best tool that America's military has in the GWOT, well, THAT is something -- see "Chosen Soldier").The only negative item that I noted was that at the end of the book Couch speaks about the death (KIA) of Ranger Sergeant Domeji during his FOURTEENTH combat rotation since 9/11 (rotations typically being 6 months)... and (very correctly) cautions our political leaders to make damn sure that there are very serious matters of national concern before we put our men (and women) in harm's way.Unfortunately, early in the book he makes the error of talking about how the Rangers have "benefited" from our engagement in a "long war". No. No one benefits from a long war. As far back as at least Sun Tzu it has been recognized that long wars are of great detriment.BTW, this is NOT a book about The Ranger School where one wins the Ranger Tab (but NOT entry into a Ranger unit). Though The Ranger School is discussed to a moderate degree late in the book, this book is about RASP and the training required to get into and stay with a Ranger unit (and earn the Ranger Scroll). Note: To stay with a Ranger unit and / or get promoted to E5 a "Scrolled Ranger" MUST attend and successfully pass the Ranger School and earn his Tab.I also would recommend "Shadow Warriors" as a companion read as this is a book about the making of Rangers and has minimal discussion as to military actions.
I've read other books by Couch before. This one is not as well done but only slightly. He covers the history of the Regiment well as well as the first 2 training events. But during the next part, once the boys are Rangers, it dips a little. The training is so vague it might not even be with mentioning.Other than that small part, this book is great! I really enjoyed learning about what Rangers go through to become and earn their Ranger tab, beret, and scroll.Very well written!
I have read every one of Dick Couch's books on SF selection and really enjoy them. He is able to describe it thoroughly without making it boring, and Rangers are very unique in their selection and deployment, and he really illustrates how demanding their deployment and training schedule is. Overall great reading if you want to know what to expect if you are going through RASP, or if you know a Ranger, or if you want to know if Con-Air was an accurate depiction of how awesome Rangers are (Heavy sarcasm there).I highly recommend his other books on Green berets, Navy Seals and Marine selection!
I've read all on Dick Couch's book, non-fiction and fiction.Sua Sponte is up to his standard; professional, well-wrtten, and a joy to read.Couch starts with a new Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) class. He details the training and highlights some of the trainees. Then he follows the new Rangers to their battalion units.Along the way he explains the difference between being a Ranger in the Regiment and Ranger School. This book is a bit different from Couch's other non-fiction. SEAL platoons and Army Special Forces A Teams (ODAs) are small units. THe 75th Ranger Regiment is a large unit that is usually deployed as large units.I hope Dick Couch does books on the the 160th Spec Ops Aviation Regiment and USAF Special OPs.
