This is one of the most interesting works of fiction that I have read in the past couple of years... and as a prolific reader that says quite a lot! I would go into detail, but I refuse to give any spoilers! The available summaries will give you an idea of whether this subject matter is up your alley or not. I found it an absolutely spellbinding tale and a smooth read, which I appreciate in any written work. On a personal note, I want to urge Mr. Maikranz to make a Facebook page devoted to his title so I and others can "like" it. As of this time there is no sure page available and that's a shame.
From the forward of the book to the links available to do further research on the idea of the 'Cognomina', the book simply is bigger than itself. It suggests a work of fiction on the surface but at the same time interweaves so many facts and elements that make you stop to consider the question -- could this be true?Could we all be just living life after life but unaware of a prior selves? Could there be some of us that do remember more and some that have total recall like Evan? Is there a spectrum of remembering that all of us have but those memories are simply put to the side in our own minds as impossible or illogical?Could this explain why people seem to have predispositions to certain things or experience deja vu in places where they have never been to in this life? Why some children and even adults describe historical events as though they had lived through them? One of the other reviewers indicated that they enjoyed the book but didn't like that the cognomina didn't believe in god -- I believe that this idea makes sense on a certain level because they always believed that they would come back so they felt god-like or immortal, however, it is clear that even Evan believes in something divine and larger than himself but he is still trying to find his moral compass. We don't get to hear the about the beliefs of all of the members of this group and to me Poppy was not necessarily the best representatives of the collective -- she is just one of the more interesting and conflicted characters.I don't want to ruin the ending so I'll be vague here but I think the ending is brilliant in many ways -- if you reread the explanatory note again by Maikranz and then reread the last few pages you will find that this story weaves fact and 'fiction' in a very clever way and this happens throughout the book with Maikranz's foot notes as well. From Maikranz: "I noticed three plain notebooks in an antique shop...written in Bulgarian..."From Evan: "I have written the notebooks in Bulgarian so that he won't know...that some stranger might come for them..."This is the type of story and writing that can give you chills. Read it!
This was a really interesting book. The subject matter was a great topic for our book club. We had a chance to meet the author.I highly suggest checking this one out if you have an interest in reincarnation.
Very interesting material. Enjoyed the read. Was very well written.
This book confirms the precepts that Buddhists Lamas have held dear for centuries - A man's life is but a chapter in larger book of lifeThe story unfolds not in some high monastery but in the streets of Zurich to Morocco to Paris, a whirlwind of an adventure as Michael Evans' discovers his "True Self" and the possibilities it offers him.As one reads the book - the question is never far from mind - if this all could be true - and if it is - how our lives are but a season in the great passage through time and history.Evans discovers his "immortality" first hand and how his elder brethren have come to terms with it. An Answer to a very challenging question: "What would you do if money, space and time was no constraint?"A tale that resembles "An interview with Vampire" mixed with James Bond type adventure, with historic references is hard to put down once you start it.A highly readable and though provoking book. Highly recommend for the cerebral reader
This is one of those rare books that constantly entices, you desperately want to know what is going to happen next. If you're a fan of something akin to Hunger Games or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this should fit right in between with a little extra philosophical meat on its bones. My only criticism had to do with the ending...and I won't spoil it here...suffice to say that even THAT momentary frustration just lead me even further down the path to wanting the next book in the series to be available to read!Good stuff here, hoping we're due for the next chapter soon.
this was a good book and it is an easy read , I was a little sory that the people in this book didn` t belive in God . but that `s just me . all in all i enjoyed this storie . I hope Maikranz does an other book with the same people ,
