Review
"A spirited examination of the essence of Jewishness."—Kirkus (Kirkus 2019-01-15)"Typically Jewish is a wise and witty cornucopia of Jewish likes and dislikes, customs, humor, and tribal tastes and treasures. Over the centuries and across the globe, Jews have built a vast library of books devoted to every imaginable topic of concern and interest to the Jewish people. Typically Jewish is a charming addition to that large and inclusive library."—World Religion News (World Religion News 2019-01-18)“As Maxwell takes readers on a humorous safari to observe Jews in their natural habitat, even Jews who have never set foot in a synagogue or JCC will recognize themselves with wondrous insight. And Jews who love learning—in other words, all of us—will delight in learning a lot from Typically Jewish. I definitely did.”—Maggie Anton, author of Rashi’s Daughters and Fifty Shades of Talmud (Maggie Anton 2018-09-14)“I’m often asked, What does it mean to be Jewish? Is it a religion? A race? A nationality? A faith? A way of life? Typically Jewish answers these questions—and, like any other great Jewish book, raises many others. Complete with a superb, extremely user-friendly discussion guide, it’s a fantastic source for adult education study sessions. I plan to make it required reading for my Introduction to Judaism students.”—Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn, Temple Israel of Greater Kansas City (Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn 2018-09-14)“I loved this book and look forward to sharing it with my book groups.”—Sharon Curtis, coordinator of Lunch ‘N’ Lit and Ladies of the Night Hadassah book groups (Sharon Curtis 2018-09-14)“Maxwell took me on a fascinating whirlwind discovery tour of the top historical and modern insights into my Jewish identity, concluding with the “Typically Jewish, Atypical Fun Discussion Guide.” I highly recommend this book for Jewish book clubs, JCCs, organizations, federations, and home conversations where you too may laugh, nosh, and kvell together over your Jewish identities.”—Gail K. Harris, coauthor of Journey from Invisibility to Visibility: A Guide for Women Sixty and Beyond (Gail K. Harris 2018-09-14)“When you are about to enter Jewish life, wouldn’t it be great to have a friendly, knowledgeable, and down-to-earth tour guide? Typically Jewish is just that: a witty, unpretentious, and comprehensive explanation of the complexities and conundrums in the twenty-first century mostly Ashkenazic American Jewish experience.”—Rabbi Peretz Wolf-Prusan, chief program officer and senior educator, Lehrhaus Judaica (Rabbi Peretz Wolf-Prusan 2018-09-14)“Ever wish you could chat with a warm, funny, smart, and candid person about being a Jew or becoming a Jew? Meet Nancy Kalikow Maxwell, whose delightfully breezy and erudite Typically Jewish takes a refreshingly honest and comically affirming look at the Jewish past, present, and future.”—Rabbi Bob Alper, stand-up comedian and author of Thanks, I Needed That (Rabbi Bob Alper 2018-09-14)

From worrying to reaping pleasure (kvelling), from food preparation and enjoyment (noshing), toliving and dying, Nancy Kalikow Maxwell shows us the subtle and not-so-subtle ways Jews do it differently.I originally acquired this book out of personal interest, simply because its author had been a winner in a short story contest I sponsored. I wondered how skillfully she could develop a full length book, but Nancy Kalikow Maxwell did not disappoint. With equal measures of science, history, literature, folklore, current events and humor, Typically Jewish explores the very essence of being Jewish. Nancy Kalikow Maxwell has clearly done her homework, yet lighthearted anecdotes pepper the text of each chapter, making it, in equal measures, both an enjoyable and informative read. Let’s take a closer look at her chapter on humor, as I learned so much from this one section alone. She tells us that over the past forty years 80% of our American comedians and writers have been Jewish, noting examples from Roseanne Barr, Jack Benny, Billy Crystal, Lewis Black . . . Kalikow Maxwell suggests that to understand the essence of Jews, we need to consider their comedy, with a number of theories why this might be so: One rabbi’s theory on why Jews are drawn to comedy is that Jews love language and comedy is an art form built on love of language. Others saw humor as something Jews developed as a protective measure while living in hostile environments. Even sages addressed the essence of humor, saying that one means of discovering a person’s true character was to discover what made them laugh.Apparently even the talmud prized humorists, as Elijah singled out two male jesters as belonging to the world to come - for their ability to make sad people laugh. And then there is more. I particularly enjoyed the chapter of Detecting, the Jewish radar for detecting other Jews - a shared intimacy in being with other Jews, a feeling of automatic bonding to a MOT (Member of the Tribe).Other chapters address foods and eating (Noshing) with typically Jewish foods as apples and honey, potato pancakes fried in oil, and their historical religious bases, as opposed to typically Protestant foods as jello, white bread and French yellow mustard. And yes, Typically Jewish laws and rituals change with the times, as ethical standards for animal care and slaughter have became more humane over time.Last but not least, don't overlook the back of the book Discussion Guide, for it is filled with thought provoking questions to mull over with your friends, Jewish and Gentile alike.Lois W.
