From the Back Cover
During his time as a POW, Frank "Foo" Fujita kept a diary of daily happenings, embellished with drawings of life in the camp. He secreted the diary in the walls of his barracks, as the practice was forbidden. That diary forms the basis of these memoirs. Fujita's memoirs are also unique in that he was one of the fewer than nine hundred Americans taken prisoner on the island of Java. The bulk of American POWs in Japanese hands surrendered in the Philippines, and most of the published POW memoirs reflect their experience. Fujita's account of the defense of Java and of the fate of the "Lost Battalion" of Texas artillerymen serves to distinguish this memoir from others. At one point while a POW in Japan, Fujita was forced to be part of the Japanese radio group broadcasting propaganda. After the war, he testified at some of the war crime trials in San Francisco, and the diary on which this book is based was used as evidence in those trials.

This is a good book. I've read other books about prisoners of war during WW II, and I've personally known and talked to men who were POWs of the Japanese. I was a child during WW II when almost every man I knew was or had been in the military and I don't like to harbor animosity toward anyone over things that happened so long ago. But it is good in this day, when so many take America for granted, to read about men like Sargent Fujita who loved their country and stood loyal when the going got rough. Only 300 of the roughly 500 men of Sargent Fujita's battalion survived Japanese captivity.
Very accurate facts! Missed some dates by a day or two, but considering his situation and the difficulty of recording events in a timely manner, he was basically spot on. I knew of him since 1985 when one of his friends, Mickey Parkyns, the father of a friend of mine came to visit for a few days. During that visit, he told me that he had just came from a visit with Foo in Texas, where Foo entrusted him with a box of photographic slides which contained he and I took to a photo finishing store and had copies made for Parkyns to take with back to his home in Australia to be displayed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. I viewed those slides and some of the same pictures were in the book.
Excellent book! And a true story.
Frank Fujita came to the Dutch East Indies as a U.S. Army volunteer and was very quickly caught up in the earliest stage of World War II. Captured by the Japanese, them somehow failing to recognize he was ethnically half Japanese himself, he eventually was shipped back to Japan to a POW camp in which he carefully recorded in pictures and prose his terrible experiences. This record became this book.
Forgotten history, my uncle was with foo!
an important book in the study of Japanese Americans and WWII.
no problem
Great sense of humor, throughout. His come-backs and one-liners are great. The reader comes to really respect Foo, what he went through, and the positions he took, never knowing whether he was going to be singled out and killed or not, for his half-Japanese blood. What a hell of a sergeant! (He was not a Nisei. His mother was White/Native-American mixed, in a rare pre-WWII mixed-race marriage with a Japanese man.) As a soldier, I greatly admire the plan that he made for the final escape or fight from Tokyo, rather than face a mass execution as the Japanese war machine came to its end. His artistic ability figured in, even to the extent of having already made armbands and auto flag plates! He came up with probably the best plan ever for a mainland Japan escape and it is amazing that he even had a knife from the local market (somehow?) as a personal defense weapon. If any of this stuff had ever been discovered by the camp guards, he likely would have been beaten to death or executed, just for having it.This is one of the very, very few POW accounts from WWII that mentions sex incidents, including gay sex at the infamous "Bunker Hill" camp in downtown Tokyo from which the Zero Hour and other propaganda radio broadcasts originated.
