Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He just wants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all the other animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual Jungle Dance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird." Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, and warthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glum giraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon he is prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricket accompanist). In the vein of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Gerald's fickle "friends" quickly decide he's worthy of their attention again. With this rhyming, poignant (in a cartoonish way) tale, Giles Andreae, author of Rumble in the Jungle, and numerous other picture books, shows insecure young readers that everyone can be wonderful, even those that march to the beat of a different cricket. All the jungle's got the beat, but Gerald the giraffe has four left feet. Such is the dilemma in this British team's bouncy if didactic picture book about self-esteem. As a multitude of fleet-footed beasts eagerly "skip and prance" at the annual Jungle Dance in Africa, Gerald feels sad "because when it comes to dancing/ he was really very bad." Jeered by waltzing warthogs and cha-cha-ing chimps when he attempts to cut a rug, Gerald hangs his head and leaves the celebration behind. Luckily, a friendly cricket appears in the moonlight, chirping a morale-boosting song of self-confidence that soon sets Gerald in graceful motion. Andreae's rhyming text has a jaunty rhythm that's likely to spark interest in the read-aloud crowd, in spite of a heavy-handed message. Parker-Rees's kicky depictions of slightly anthropomorphic animals boogying on the dance floor are the highlight here. His watercolor and pen-and-ink artwork exudes a fun, party vibe. Ages 3-6. We bought a hardcover which is pretty big so our baby (he was 2 mo when we got this) with unimproved eyesight could enjoy the illustrations, and he really does enjoy it. We have owned this book for a few months now but he still gets excited when we bring this book in front of him. There is a very decent story line but the sentences aren't too long and he has some time to enjoy the page but doesn't get bored until the page is turned to the next. Vivid colors, fun illustrations, many different kinds of animals and a nice story - it is very enjoyable for different ages.
My 4 year-old and I both LOVE LOVE LOVE this book.The pictures are great, the words flow so smoothly from my tongue, and it has a valuable message about people who are perceived as different. It is so easy to identify with the emotions of the giraffe who was highly ashamed of not being able to dance and felt SO alone until he started to follow his passion.
This is a great picture book for a younger kid, the story is very wholesome and is about a giraffe named Gerald who is very clumsy until he meets a grasshopper who helps him learn to dance. The rhyming is nice and the artwork is colorful and very dynamic. I particularly love the doublepage spreads with very detailed illustrations. Cant go wrong with this book.
This book is intended for more like a 2y/o. For a 5y/o i would want better graphics and storyline.. Great quality book and manufactured materials just the substance was lacking. Very hard to determine from an online presentation without being able to hold the book in your hand.
This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. It makes me so happy to look at it.The reviewer, Scotflower, is right about the author's poor choice of name-calling. I handle that by changing those words or skipping them when reading to my 3 yr old grandson.
After this book was given to my daughter as a gift it quickly became a favorite of hers! It tells the story of a giraffe being ridiculed and then learning to dance to his own music- a great message for any kid, if you ask me! The illustrations are fun and every page is busy and colorful- very stimulating. There are times when we can spend several minutes on each page after we have finished reading it just to point out all of the different animals and the sounds that they make, etc. And the story has a very rhythmic tone to its rhyming making it fun to read! Since she was given this book we have purchased at least 3 more copies to give out to our family and friends' children.
I bought this for my 2 year old granddaughter after she left her copy at home. She spends Friday evening through Sun afternoons with me & we READ! This is her #1 favorite book.It's all about the way we perceive others and the way we can make others feel so very bad by making fun of them.It is a heartwarming story that I bought in hardback so we can reread it through out her young years.She is now just three but can read a little of it herself.he LOVES this story so much she pushed to learn words so she could read it to me. Gilbert even has a wood pull TOY giraffe and a stuffed giraffe named after him.Buy this for ANY child from 1 year to 6! They will LOVE " GIRAFFES CAN'T DANCE". I PROMISE!
Giraffes Can't Dance is an adorable book. The other animals in the jungle seems to have no worries about dancing at the Jungle Dance, but Gerald the Giraffe isn't feeling as confident. That is until he gets a great piece of advice from a cricket. This book has a lot of animals doing all sorts of dances that will make kids laugh. The illustrations are colorful and the story moves along nicely with a rhyming pattern that is fun to read aloud. This book has a great lesson about how to overcome bullying and learning to dance to your own beat!
Really fun book. Read it to grandson's first grade class when I was the "mystery reader". The children had lots of comments about bullying and making fun of others. The session ended with one little boy showing us the dance he knew . . . the Conga . . . line formed and everyone danced!
